New report: Rights and REDD in Amazon Countries and Paraguay

In June 2011, representatives of indigenous peoples and environmental and human rights organizations from 6 countries in South America met to discuss their experiences with REDD (Reduced Emissions from Deforestation and forest Degradation).

The workshop, which took place in Quito, Ecuador, lasted 3 days and was hosted by Rainforest Foundation Norway and the Ecuadorian organization CEPLAES. The workshop report describes the development of REDD processes in Bolivia, Brazil, Ecuador, Guyana, Paraguay and Peru, seen from the perspective of indigenous peoples and organizations that strive to protect the tropical forests of South America.

The report also summarizes discussions of three main subjects: the potential impact of REDD on the rights of indigenous peoples to their territories, how to ensure that REDD processes are developed with broad and effective participation and respecting the Free, Prior and Informed Consent (FPIC) of indigenous peoples, and how to monitor and report on social and environmental safeguards for REDD.
